ALEX ARELLANO
Drums
Alex was born into a musical and artistic family, so it was only natural for him to pick up an instrument in his youth. He began playing piano, but became uncomfortable with it, and switched to drums. He was age 14 when he began taking lessons, but only did so for a few months, after which he took it upon himself to learn on his own.
Alex has received recognition from local rock magazines, has done radio interviews, and has won a community musical award.
He appeared in the March 1997 issue of Modern Drummer magazine, which said, in part, "he displays blistering technique and innovative musical approach". He also appeared in Drum! magazine, which had the following to say about Alex and Power of Omens; "They are all topnotch players who have painstakingly orchestrated their complex music to include endless flashes of pyrotechnic festoons and frills. Alex has his act together, with a booming drum sound, polished technique and a reliable groove that smoothly gets around tricky tempo changes and time signatures. Alex is hot stuff!"
Finding himself with a desire to learn more, and with the support of his family, Alex went to Los Angeles to attend M.I. (P.I.T.); while there, he hooked up with Mark Craney (Jethro Tull/Jean-Luc Ponty) for drum lessons. In addition to his work with Power of Omens, Alex has recorded jingles, played in theater productions, and gives lessons as time permits. His influences include players such as Mark Craney, Chad Wackerman, Dave Weckl, Terry Bozzio, and Mark Zonder.
Alex considers Power of Omens to be the perfect vessel for expression and constant improvement. He and his wife and their two little girls currently reside in San Antonio, where they have lived for the past four years. When Alex isn't cramming new music into his schedule, he likes to play video games, read, draw, and watch Japanese sci-fi shows (such as Ultraman), cartoons, and the Three Stooges.
